Trans Legal Fight: Ms. Castle V. Cobb County, Georgia

April 23, 2019

On march 28, 2018 Sierra Castle, a post-operative trans woman, was thrown in jail for a $15 unpaid seat belt violation penalty. Upon arriving at the Cobb County Detention Facility she was told that she “would be considered male while in jail”. All of her legal documents indicated she was female including her drivers license. Dressed in female clothing, she was thrown into a male holding cell where she was ridiculed, harassed and threatened by both inmates and Cobb County officers. Gregg speaks with Ms. Castle as well as her attorney Kenneth Barton III about what happened that day and the negative effects still being felt by Ms. Castle as well as the pending lawsuit against Cobb County based on the violation of her constitutional rights under the 8th and 14th Amendments.
