In 2018 the supreme court upheld a Colorado cake baker’s right to refuse to make a wedding cake for a gay couple based on his religious beliefs. Dubbed the “Wedding Cake Case”, it garnered a lot of attention across the country. Inspired by the case, playright Bekah Brunstetter wrote a play “The Cake” that tells the story of a cake baker in NC, Della, and her struggle around whether to make a wedding cake for Jen, a girl she helped raise who is gay. Gregg speaks to actor Rhyn Mclemore savor, who has a long history with the project and is currently playing Jen. Although marketed as a comedy, “The Cake” poignantly displays the very real internal struggles for those attempting to reconcile long held religious beliefs with the love that they have for their gay friends and family. At a deeper level, the play speaks to the larger issue of how we communicate with each other around issues where there is fundamental disagreement and suggests better methods for responding through listening, compassion and respect. Great show this was!
