On Being Older, Gay, Single, Male and Lonely: Part 2

August 13, 2019

Currently there are over 3 million LGBT adults over the age of 50 and that number is expected to grow to 7 million by 2030. Over half of this aging population is single. Continuing from last week’s show, Gregg and local therapist, Franklin Abbott, discuss the struggles the aging gay population encounter in a society that seems to value youth over everything else. Franklin helps us to understand that it’s totally possible to be single and fulfilled. He is living proof! Also on the show is the owner of one of the most popular gay bars in Atlanta – a place that can be quite intimidating for an older gay man looking to make a connection. He sees these men in his bar every night and regularly schools his staff on what these men have gone through growing up in a much more homophobic society than exists today. What he has to say about how “to go the extra mile” to help these men feel seen in his bar is truly inspiring.
